Many of us have become so accustomed to driving everywhere that we feel comfortable multi-tasking behind the wheel. We assume it’s safe to do other tasks, like text messaging, taking phone calls, eating, applying makeup, etc. However, that overconfidence in our capacity to multitask can lead to a distracted driving violation.

Distracted driving is any activity that takes the driver’s attention off the road. Smartphones have especially contributed to the increase of distracted driving accidents.

Distracted Driving Stories

Cheri Madiak dropped off her 13-year old son at a friend’s house and told him to call her when he was ready to go home. However, the call from her son, Parker Madiak, never came. The teenage boy had chosen to walk home after leaving his friend’s place. A couple of hours after that, the police found his body close to Welcome Sargent Rd in Newnan. On that fateful evening in February, 2015, Parker had been hit by a teen who was texting while operating a vehicle.

In another incident, a vehicle Pierre St. Brice was traveling in with his companions was hit head on at a bustling Douglasville Highway. The car was struck by a distracted teen driver, Josh Murphy, who died on the scene. Furthermore, Pierre became paralyzed from the chest down, because of the collision.

In the summer of 2015, a 17-year old driver in Minnesota killed a man and his 10-year old daughter. The teen ran a red light because she was texting and driving. She was sentenced to 4 years of probation and over 200 hours of community service.

On another accident, Ashley Umscheid sustained fatal injuries when her pickup flipped over, tossing her into a ditch. Before the accident happened, the 19-year old was trying to send a text message to her older sister. The Kansas State University Student succumbed to her injuries several days after the 2009 accident.

The above distracted driving stories are just a portion of the horrific outcomes of not paying full attention while operating a vehicle. Countless more deaths have occurred because of distracted drivers.
